Your dog does not need to wear an outfit for a party or a photo. If they seem uncomfortable, leave it off. If they willingly tolerate clothing, keep it simple, check the fit and supervise them for a short period rather than expecting them to wear it all day.
Start with your dog's response, not the photo
Try the garment at home when things are calm. Let your dog investigate it, offer a reward for voluntary interest and make the first fitting brief. Do not restrain them to get the outfit on. Some dogs freeze, struggle to remove clothing or pant when distressed; these are reasons to stop, not signs that they need to get used to it. If you cannot tell whether they are comfortable, skip the outfit.
Check fit and normal movement
Measure your dog and compare those measurements with the individual listing rather than choosing by a size letter alone. Once dressed, watch them walk, turn, sit and lie down. Check that the garment does not cover the eyes, nose or mouth, restrict toileting, pull tightly around the chest or legs, or hang so loosely that a paw could catch.
For an example of a simple occasion outfit, the brown plaid dog shirt is listed in size L with a 45 cm bust and 35 cm back length. Those are listing measurements, not a promise of fit: compare them with your dog's measurements and check their movement in person. It has front buttons and a D-ring on the back, so check both for security and avoid assuming the garment's ring is a suitable lead attachment.
Keep the outfit brief and supervised
Stay with your dog while they wear clothing. Check for loose buttons or other parts that could be pulled off and swallowed. Remove the garment if your dog becomes tangled, starts trying to get it off, pants, freezes or cannot move normally. Clothing can also obscure body language, making it harder to notice how your dog feels around people or other dogs.
In warm Australian weather, an outfit can add unwanted heat. Leave it off when it is hot, and make sure your dog can rest, drink and toilet normally. If there is any doubt, a photo without clothing is the better choice.
What if your dog dislikes clothes?
Do not persist just for an event. Let your dog join the celebration in their usual comfortable gear, or photograph them beside a decoration they cannot reach or chew. A relaxed dog matters more than a matching outfit.
