Wash your dog’s bed regularly rather than waiting for a strong smell. A weekly clean is a useful starting point for beds and blankets; clean sooner if the bedding is visibly dirty, wet or soiled. The right washing method depends on the bed’s care instructions, not just whether its product name says ‘washable’.
Start with the care label
Check which parts, if any, can go in the washing machine and what cycle and temperature the maker allows. Do not assume that an entire padded bed, its filling or a removable section can be machine-washed. If there are no instructions, avoid guessing with a hot cycle that could damage the bed; use a gentle cleaning method appropriate to the material or ask the seller for care guidance.
Remove loose hair and debris before washing. For a machine-washable part, use laundry detergent and a cycle suitable for its fabric. A fragrance-free, dye-free detergent may be worth considering if your dog has sensitive skin. Dry the bedding thoroughly according to its care instructions before putting it back in your dog’s sleeping spot.
When should you clean it more often?
- After a toilet accident, promptly remove soiled bedding and clean it using its care instructions.
- After muddy or wet outings, check the bed and wash any dirty or damp bedding rather than leaving it in place.
- If the bed develops a noticeable odour or visible dirt before your usual wash day, bring the wash forward.
Cleaning removes everyday dirt. It does not replace veterinary advice or a parasite-control plan. If you suspect fleas, contact your vet about suitable treatment for your dog and the household; bedding and the surrounding environment may need attention as part of that plan. Persistent scratching, sore skin or recurring accidents also deserve veterinary advice rather than another wash alone.
Choosing a bed that fits your routine
Before buying, check the dimensions against the space your dog uses and ask how the particular bed should be cleaned. A washable design can make routine care more practical, but check its actual care label for what can be washed. For a small or medium dog, one option to consider is the yellow banana-shaped washable pet bed, listed in the dog-bed range at 58 × 35 cm. Measure your dog and the available floor space rather than relying on a size label alone.
Keep the routine simple: inspect the bed when you tidy the sleeping area, clean it around once a week as a starting point, and adjust for your dog’s mess and the bed’s care instructions.
