Stainless steel, ceramic, slow feeders and raised bowls — learn what to consider when choosing everyday food and water bowls.
Food and water bowls are everyday pet essentials, but there are more options available than you might expect.
The right choice depends on your pet, your home and how the bowl will be used.
Stainless steel bowls
Stainless steel is a popular option because it is durable and relatively easy to clean.
Some designs also include a non-slip base to help prevent the bowl from moving during meals.
Ceramic bowls
Ceramic bowls are often heavier than plastic or stainless steel bowls, which can help keep them in place.
If choosing ceramic, regularly check the bowl for cracks, chips or other damage.
Slow feeder bowls
Some pets eat their food very quickly.
Slow feeder bowls use raised sections or patterns that make pets work around obstacles to reach their food.
Choose a design appropriate for your pet’s size and feeding style.
Raised feeding stations
Raised bowls place food and water higher off the floor.
They can also help keep the feeding area organised, particularly when using separate food and water bowls.
The appropriate height will depend on your pet and the product.
Portable bowls
Collapsible or portable bowls are useful when you are away from home.
They can be helpful for:
• Walks
• Road trips
• Camping
• Holidays
• Visiting friends and family
They are designed to take up less space than standard household bowls.
Do not forget the water bowl
Fresh drinking water should be readily available to your pet.
Choose a water bowl with enough capacity for your pet and check it regularly throughout the day.
Keeping bowls clean
Food residue, fur and dirt can accumulate around feeding areas.
Wash your pet’s bowls regularly and follow the cleaning instructions provided with the product.
Choosing your setup
Think about your pet’s size, eating habits and where you plan to place the bowls.
A simple setup that is easy to clean and convenient to use is often the best place to start.
